How It All Began
My journey into the world of horses started 15 years ago, when a part-time stablehand job sparked a lifelong passion. What began as weekend work quickly evolved into a full-time role, managing 25 horses solo on a private agistment property nestled in the beautiful Duffy’s Forest area of the Northern Beaches.
Through this hands-on experience, I came to understand how essential consistent, thoughtful care is—both physically and mentally—for the wellbeing of horses. I noticed a clear gap in the local industry: a shortage of reliable, knowledgeable stablehands who would show up rain or shine, and who truly put the horse’s welfare first. Too often, I heard distressing stories of horses left unfed, improperly handled, or simply neglected—all situations that were entirely avoidable.
This awareness guided me into veterinary nursing, where I began in general practice before moving into Emergency and Critical Care. At the same time, I continued my equine work behind the scenes—visiting private properties to feed, rug, water, handle, and clean up after horses as a trusted local hand. During this period, I completed both a Diploma of Performance Horse Management and a Diploma of Emergency & Critical Care Nursing through TAFE NSW, with fond memories of working the school horses at SIEC.
As word-of-mouth referrals grew, my career naturally returned to full-time equine care. I managed a boutique agistment yard and, in 2023, began studying for my Bachelor of Equine Studies while continuing to train and compete with my own horses. Every aspect of this work—from tailoring care routines to recognising a horse’s subtle signals—feeds my passion for horsemanship.
To stay sharp and current in my veterinary skills, I continue to work regularly in a veterinary clinic, ensuring my knowledge and hands-on abilities remain up to date and aligned with best practices—especially important when providing medical support under veterinary direction.
Today, I’ve committed fully to running The Barn Chick, combining professional expertise with genuine care. Whether I’m perfecting a clean stable line or dodging a grumpy rooster, no two days are ever the same—and that’s exactly how I like it.
I’m endlessly grateful for the incredible support I’ve received from my clients, friends, and family who have helped shape this path. Special thanks to my close friends, especially Callum and Zenne, for standing beside me through every challenge and celebration. To my husband Cameron, thank you for the patience, the late-night meals, and the endless cups of tea. And to my father Richard, who believed in me from the very beginning—ever since a young girl in Year 4 fell in love with horses and left gymnastics behind to chase something bigger.
And finally, to Beautiful Bella, my first Thoroughbred. She may not have had perfect conformation, but she had the perfect heart. Patient, kind, and endlessly forgiving—she taught me more than any textbook ever could. She’ll always be the golden thread woven through the start of this story.
